THANK YOU for purchasing the Native Instruments B4.

This document contains a list of new functions and important information about the B4, which do not appear in the printed manual.

Important notes

Latency

In the B4 standalone you should optimize the Play Ahead setting for your soundcard in System/Audio Settings, in order to reduce the latency - the delay between pressing a key and hearing the sound.

Caution

If you hear harsh digital distortion (clipping) when playing many notes, you must reduce the Volume setting in the Control View to prevent overloading the soundcard.

Emagic Logic

Logic 4.x has its own method for assigning MIDI controller numbers to VST plug-ins, where all MIDI controllers are reassigned to MIDI controllers over 64. Logic 5.x does not reassign MIDI controllers, unless the 4.x compatibility mode is selected in the properties menu.

Steinberg Cubase VST

Version 5.0r1 of Cubase VST will reset all your parameter changes if the inspector is open, the plugin's track is selected and the arrangement window returns up to foreground.

Additions to the Manual

Audio Input

The B4 can also be used as a VST and DXi insert effect. Any audio input to the plug-in is then processed by the B4's Scanner Vibrato (when Upper Vibrato is switched ON), Overdrive (when Drive is switched ON) and Rotator (when Rotator is switched ON) and mixed with any organ tones that may also be playing.

Motu MAS (Mac)

The B4 supports the Motu Audio System. You can use the B4 as AudioInput PlugIn in Digital Performer.

FreeMidi (Mac)

As well as OMS support, the B4 is supporting FreeMidi interfaces. You can also route MIDI signals directly from Digital Performer into the B4 via Inter-Application MIDI.

Digidesign DirectConnect (Mac)

If you encounter crackles and pops in the audio signal, please choose a greater buffer in the Pro Tools Setup menu -> Audio Playback Engine.

QWERTY

With the B4 standalone, you can play the upper manual from the computer keyboard.

Keysplit Markers

When Keysplit is activated, the split points are shown with markers on the upper manual in the Keyboards View.

Controller Dump

The current value of all panel controls is sent out as MIDI Controller messages when the entry Dump Controllers in the Preset menu is selected.

View Toggle

You can quickly toggle between the two views by clicking on the right-hand side of the B4's menu bar.

Presets

You can open a pop-up menu for selecting Presets by clicking on the NI-Logo at the left end of the B4's menu bar. In the Control View you can scroll through the B4's presets by holding down the Ctrl key (PC) or Apple key (Mac) and dragging the Preset Number up and down with the mouse. Alternatively you can use the right mouse button (PC).

Preset Store

The Preset Menu has two entries for storing presets:

·  Store: Immediately stores the current setting in the current preset.

·  Store As...: works as described in the manual: the bank selectore lights up red and storing is completed by selecting a preset.
The switch controlling Tube Amp Overdrive is labelled DRIV (not DIST) on the Keyboard View and DRIVE (not OVERDRIVE) on the Control View.

MIDI Controller Templates

The B4 can be used with any programmable MIDI controller box. Included with the B4 are templates in the form of MIDI SysEx files for the Peavey PC1600x and the Kenton Control Freak 16. The faders on either of these units are very convenient for controlling the B4's drawbars.

Demo Songs

Included on the CD are some songs for demonstrating the B4's sound. They are available in both Standard MIDI File and Cubase Song format. You may have to change the Cubase tracks' MIDI Output Port to "B4(1)".

Keyboard control

Remember: Non VST 2.1 compatible host applications do not pass any computer keyboard strokes to the VST plugin!
